You guys know that I love sharing my style inspiration, but coming in as a close second is my love for working with paint. I love finding the perfect color or exact neutral that a room calls for. Understanding the way that undertones play such an important rule in picking paint colors (when it comes to neutrals especially) has made all the difference when specifying colors for my clients. Well, I didn’t understand any of that when I was selecting paint colors for our home 3.5 years ago. I painted a large white square in every room and then painted 10 different shades of greige to sit and stare at. I eventually came to a decision that I was happy with for every space, but it was quite a time (and money) consuming commitment. Studying under Color Expert, Maria Killam last year and making the investment to have her color boards on hand now makes this process exponentially easier! Having the top Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore colors on hand to move around and compare/contrast allows me not only to see how each shade would look, but also to show my clients why one color will work better than another.
With all that being said, today I wanted to share one of my favorite neutral paint colors, Sherwin Willams Accessible Beige. This color runs though most of our home including our living room, kitchen, master bedroom and our sons bedroom. These days I feel like the term beige can scare people away. We immediately picture those warm yellow and orange beiges of decades past and in fear turn to a grey that may end up feeling too cold. Accessible Beige actually borders being a gray and falls into the greige category. It technically has a green undertone but it can be a bit of a chameleon in different spaces. It gives a great warmth to our walls that I absolutely love and I have carried that love into a number of other homes that I’ve had the chance to work in. I wanted to share some of those spaces with you today so I can make a case for this beautiful hue.
Lovely, isn’t it?! Now, I’m not saying that this color is guaranteed to work for you. I have certainly pulled it out in some homes where it did absolutely nothing for their rooms. But in the right places with the right complimentary colors, it can do wonders!

As a side note, if you are planning to paint, I highly recommend ordering large painted swatches that you can hang and replace from Samplize. They have all the top paint brands and you typically have your swatches in hand the following day. Hi Laura! I just shot you an email with a visual, but in response to this question, the main difference is that Accessible Beige has a green undertone and Agreeable Grey has a violet undertone. Both are beautiful colors used in the right place (I have Agreeable Gray in our family room). Hope that helps!
Which white paint would you recommend for cabinets and trim when using the Accessible Beige at 50%?
I’m a big fan of SW Pure White which is just a touch off-white giving it a beautiful touch of warmth.
So this accesible beige in the pictures is cut 50%?
I only cut it for one project (the one where I noted above) as it was reading too dark in their space. All others, my home included, I used at regular strength.

I recently tried the SW Neutral Ground in my north facing room, but the undertone is too much orange. I got a sample of this SW Accesible Beige and it doesn’t seem to pull an undertone, but looks too heavy in my north facing living room. Do you recommend cutting it at 50%? Does that change the LRV and won’t look too washed out?

Hi! From what I’ve seen and heard, Accessible Beige carries a slight green undertone which reads as a beautiful neutral. I have also cut it by 50% for a client’s house and it worked perfectly (although I’d still recommend sampling). I can’t say exactly what it does to the LRV but it turned out beautifully for us!

Hi! SW Snowbound is a pretty off-white that would look pretty with AB. I wouldn’t venture too far past that or you’ll end up getting into the creams which wouldn’t look as crisp next to Accessible Beige. Good luck!
Could assessable beige butt up with useful gray? I have one wall that goes from lower level(useful gray) to upper level and I don’t know what to do with it, since thinking of painting upper level accessible beige.
That’s a tough question. I’d say that it mainly depends on whether there are clear breaks in the space or not. In short, I don’t think these two colors would look great together, especially if you can see them both at the same time. I would prefer to see a change in colors with more of a contrast.
Hello, am considering AB for family/kitchen, which adjoins living/dining room (separated by an open doorway, so you can view both). Would it be OK to paint the LR/DR White Duck, Shojii White, or another off white color? The trim and top cabinets will be Pure White. Last … what do you think of AB on walls AND lower kitchen cabinets?
Hi Judi! I’ve worked with Shoji more than White Duck and I think that color could work well with AB. I’m not sure I’d personally choose to paint the lower cabinets the same color as the walls, but that would just be my preference.

Hi Jenny! Both are beautiful colors which I have in my home. The main difference is that Agreeable has a violet undertone and Accessible has a green undertone. So it’ll just depend which relates more to your furniture, rugs etc.
Beautiful color. How does it compare to Modern Gray (lighter version of Colonnade Gray)? I want to put one of them on my two living room walls in an open concept area to lighten it up (it’s always in shadow) and distinguish it from the kitchen. Accessible Beige seems to blend better with the kitchen color (Jogging Path) and make it look more soft neutral and less green (which is good!) What do you think?
AB most likely looks better because it also has a green undertone, although it comes off much more neutral than Jogging Path. I’m almost certain that Modern Gray has a violet undertone which is likely why it’s not feeling quite right. AB could be a great option, but if you wanted to compare one other that’s a little lighter yet still has a green undertone is Ben Moore’s Classic Grey. Hopefully one of those works out for you!

Hi! I would like to lighten some of my walls but keep the Antique White trim, especially since I would have to repaint the plantation shutters. Would Agreeable Beige work with the Antique White? I know it won’t pop like it would with some brighter whites.
Hi Jay! I’m assuming you’re referring to SW Antique White? If so I’d sample a large area (or paint a large sample board to move around). I’m not sure you’ll have much of a contrast as they are rather close in color. Antique White looks to have a decent amount of yellow which may end up making the trim look ‘dirty’. Let me know what you come up with!
I was wondering if you went with accessible beige with the AW trim…I am in the same boat and want to use it but don’t want my trim to look dirty.
What are your thoughts on painting interior walls, doors and trim in accessible beige? We have a one level condo with a short hallway that has several bedroom and bath plantation shutter doors in close proximity to one another. The floor and baseboards are tile so it would be the doors and jambs that would match the walls. Too monochromatic?
Hi Mary! That’s more of a personal preference when it comes to going monochromatic. But if you love the look, I say go for it!

White trim. Soffits are rounded and will be accessable beige but problem is kitchen ceiling. Can be painted accessable beige ( lots of cams on ceiling) so the soffits are the same or white but then that soffit sticks out. Your suggestion appreciated.

Hi Diane! Those two colors are both beautiful in their own regard, and they do look pretty together, but personally I’d like to see a little more contrast going from one color to another. You could always paint a large sample board to get a better idea for yourself in your space and hopefully that will make your decision a little more clear!
Hi. I was wondering if SW accessible beige pairs with BM Swiss coffee? Was thinking those two with a third color like SW Iron Ore. Thoughts?
I just painted my kitchen Revere Pewter and I absolutely love how it turned out. My kitchen faces west and my cabinets are almond. Now, the next room is the living room that faces West and gets a lot of light from a big bay window. Would you recommend to continue RP or go with accessible Beige?
Hi Pam! Without seeing the space in person, I’d say sticking with RP is your better bet. The colors aren’t drastically different and may just have people questioning if it’s the same color or not, especially since it gets different light. If you love RP where it is, you’ll likely love it in another space, regardless of the light.
Would Accesible Beige work with my dark gray sofa?
Hi Paula, that will mainly depend on the undertones of your sofa. Grey can have a blue, green or violet undertone. If it has a green undertone, there’s a good chance it could work. Otherwise you may want to look into other colors.
I Love Accessible Beige when it shows the more beige taupe undertones than the gray but how can I achieve this look?
Hi Nichelle, AB technically has a green undertone to it, not taupe. I’d recommend painting a large sample board to move around your room to see if it’s reading the way you want it to in your space.

My kitchen is open into my livingroom . The kitchen is painted Sherwin Williams Seasalt. I am wondering what tne best beige color would be to use in the living room . My hardwood floors are a medium to dark brown with orange tones. Any help you can give me would be appreciated.
Hi Jan, Sea Salt is one of my favorite colors! And fortunately (or not) it can work with most beiges/grays. What’s more important to make this decision is looking at the undertones of your furniture, rugs, pillows, drapes etc. and working off of that to help make a better decision.
What do you think of accessible beige for the exterior? I’m thinking of updating my stucco home and need both a lighter shade (for wood trim-maybe aesthetic white?) and darker shade (for stucco banding around windows) that would look good. I’ve also got some stone on the front so I want to blend all the colors.
Hi Rhonni. The most important influencer in guiding your decision should be the stone that won’t be changing. Make sure you play off of the strongest influencing undertone in the stone and work off of that. For reference, AB has a green undertone, so keep that in mind!
Hi! Our townhouse is basically one big great-room on the first floor. The kitchen and living room are currently painted 2 different colors and I feel it gives it a closed off look. I’d love to paint our whole downstairs, staircase, one color to open it up a bit. Unfortunately our kitchen remodel was back in 2013 and we went w traditional off white (that’s really almond) cabinets. We’re trying to go more..west elm, less pottery barn LOL

Hi Maria! This can be tricky to specify without seeing the colors in person, but if your cabinets are similar to the kitchen above, I’d say you have a good chance of it working! You’ll also want to pay attention to the undertones in your sofa. AB has a green undertone, so you’ll want to make sure that works with your sofa as well (which could also have a blue of violet undertone). I hope this is helpful! We just painted our entire upstairs AB with a white trim. Totally love it! We are struggling with finding a carpet color to match. I came across your blog with your beautiful bedroom and the carpet and weals look great together! Can you tell me your carpet brand and color as well as suggest some carpet colors that will compliment the wall.

Hi Ashley! Unfortunately our carpet was installed just before we moved in by the previous owner, so I do not know the brand/color. Since AB has a green undertone, I’d look for something that has the same. Typically when looking at the various carpet swatches next to one another, you can decipher these differences a little easier!

I am looking to paint my living room that has cathedral ceilings with AB . Would you recommend painting the ceilings with white ceiling paint or just painting the ceiling the same color on both ceiling and walls, I have 2 skylights and 2 south west windows that get a lot of light in the afternoon but not a lot of other natural light during the early part of the day. I have medium to dark wood flooring and dark brown leather furniture. Do you think the AB will lighten up the room and go with the flooring and furniture. Have golden oak trim in this room
Hi Kathy! When you say ‘lighten up’, I suppose this will be in comparison to what you currently have. In a room with abundant natural light, you won’t have any issues with it feeling light. I have it in our living room which doesn’t get a ton of light and it still feels very fresh! I’d test it out next to your oak trim before you comment to make sure you feel good with it!
Do you think AB mixed at 50% and Alabaster would be pretty together?
I sure do! Not quite as much contrast obviously, but still very fresh.
We just painted our open concept first floor accessible beige and really like it. We have creamy colored kitchen cabinets and am concerned if it matches. One wall matches up up to the cabinets
It sounds like your creamy cabinets have a similar LRV and undertone which causes them to appear to match in certain lighting. LRV = light reflective value. I would want a wall paint to contrast with the cabinets unless it is a very small kitchen. Avoid putting anything with a yellow or a pink undertone with Accessible Beige, whatever you choose to do. Great input, thanks Angela! I agree. I have off-white cabinets next to AB and I love it. But if your cabinets push more towards cream (with a stronger yellow undertone) you may not love the contrast.

Hi Robin! I wouldn’t focus as much as the direction of the light as I would the undertones in the countertops. That’s going to be the ‘boss’ in making your decision. AB has a green undertone to it (grey could also have blue or purple undertones). Once you can identify that you’ll have a better direction!

We are building a house and just had our cabinets done in AB. Trying to decide on a color for the rest of the interior. It’s a large Craftsman, very open kitchen into the great room. With the cabinets accessible beige, can the walls also be accessible beige? Or should I go a bit darker grey? Gotta decide by next week!
Hi Tera! Personally, I’d like to see a contrast between my walls and cabinetry. Darker is an option but maybe consider going lighter as well if there’s enough natural light to support it :)

How does Accessible Beige work with travertine? I have a master bathroom full of travertine (part of the walls and floors) and want to update & freshen the space. The bathroom gets tons of morning/eastern light.
Hi Terri! That depends on the undertones in your particular travertine as it can vary greatly from what I’ve seen. AB has a green undertone, which would look good with some and not so hot with others. I do offer e-consultations if it’s a space where I’m able to get a good read on colors through pictures. Would SWMedici Ivory trim be ok with SW Accessible Beige walls?
Hi Lauren, I’m not all that familiar with Medici Ivory, but if it’s a strong yellow undertone, it may not have much of a contrast with the AB.
I have painters working as I type this!! I’m in a panic, I have waited 10-years to get rid of the yellow/brown tones and here we are…I had aesthetic white as my choice (cherry cabinets/floors) and now on the walls it looks like white out to me. I was hoping to go with a tad more contrast (in the beige, NOT grey direction). Trim will be white.

We have purchased a sample of accessible beige but it’s a little darker in some rooms then I envisioned for our final product. Would cutting the color by 25% do anything for the color, or would 50% be more realistic for contrast. I am wanting more color then aesthetic white but not as much color as full strength accessible beige…I have until 630a tomorrow to get my paint color finalized! It’s our whole open floor plan and basement — Stressed!
Hi Jamie! I hear you, paint can be stressful AND costly. Without diving into a consultation, I can’t specify an accurate color for you (I’d need to know more about the undertones in the hard finishes, such as the counters etc). Aesthetic White is very likely too stark of a white for the warmth of a cherry kitchen. If you’re feeling good about the AB and are just looking to lighten it, I’d recommend cutting it by 50% which I have done before. Hi, I want to paint the interior walls of my condo AB but my floors are travertine with a pinky/ sandy udertone..would that work or do you have another suggestion of a neutralthat works with this type of travertine?
Hi Tracy, AB could compliment the pink in your travertine, but you’ll also want to keep in mind the undertones you have in other finishes such as counter tops as well as furniture, rugs etc.
I have lots of oak in my house and that won’t be changing anytime soon. Our main floor is a open space and I want to paint it all the same color. I was looking at Agreeable Gray or Accessible Beige. Which one would go better with the tones in the oak? Or would you recommend a third option? Thanks!
Hi Jamie, what’s going to play a stronger role in your paint selection are the other finishes that carry an undertone…ie your counter tops, backsplash, rugs, upholstered furniture etc, depending on all the spaces you’re looking to carry it. Those will play a higher importance in coordinating with.
I have real barnwood wainscoting in an open kitchen/living room( north & east walls) . Oak furniture and old reclaimed brick style rust/ charcoal full wall fireplace on S wall. I’m torn between SW modern gray maybe being too taupe and SW accessible beige’s warmer tones but it may look dark. Any help? Would cutting accessible beige be the right paint color or leaving it true because of its warmth? Carpet is light beige taupe color. I need to pick my color within 24hrs please!!
That’s a lot to take into account, but hopefully you are happy with your selection! One great resource for the future is Samplize. They allow you to order large color swatches which helps make this decision much easier!
Looking for a taupe or greige for kitchen and a hallway wall that goes well with Seasalt in adjoining open rooms. Considering Accessible Beige but i wonder what you think about that against a gray subway tile backsplash? (We won’t be replacing the backspash)

I’m also looking at Modern Gray. Does anyone have experience with that as far as undertones? According to where it falls in spectrum at SW and according to their employee there is very little, but if any green… Saw on Houzz that someone said it throws a pink.

Hi Jen, I’d have to see the marble in person to really be able to specify a color, but both AB and Shitake carry a green undertone, which seems to be what you’re looking for. And I could see them both complimenting Urbane Bronze. I’d recommend painting both sample on large white cardboard to move about your space and see how they read on a larger scale.
Hello Marisa, we have open floor plan, kitchen, dining room and living room all kind of togher. Our cabinets are white oak, white oak floor, thinking to pain alabaster, agreeable gray or accessable beige, white trims all around, what would you recommend . At first we were thinking to color everything alabaster or cloud white. And Accessable beige our master bedroom and kids room. So lost please help. Other color that we like are edgecomb gray. We would like warm colors. Thinking to go with white everywhere and do beige or gray for bedroom. Please help thank you

We have a living room painted in Amazing Gray and other beautiful blueish grey paint colors all throughout it the house (SW naval in guest bedroom, foggy day in master bed and bath). The kitchen is off of the living room but has separation with white trim. We’d love to paint our honey oak cabinets a pretty off-who tree color. The kitchen is currently Foggy Day but we are considering a lighter color and then using AB on the cabinets. Any thoughts? Thank you!

Hi Alexis! AB would make a great cabinet color, but there’s a lot you should take into consideration. Pay attention to the undertones in both your countertop and backsplash as they could help dictate what color you should lean towards. AB has a green undertone, so keep that in mind. That being the case, I wouldn’t recommend pairing that with Agreeable Gray (which has a violet undertone) as they wouldn’t work well together. We just moved into a house in the south with loads of beautiful wood trim—all of which is painted AB. The walls are a fairly dark gray which is too dark for me (at least too dark for every room). Is there a white that won’t make the trim look dirty? I am looking at Alabaster, Swiss Coffee or BM dove white. I would love to paint the trim white but my husband thinks it would be to difficult because of the sheer magnitude of wood trim, plus all the interior doors.
Hi Karin, my first question prior to deciding on a white would be to make sure your home receives enough light in order to bring a white to life. If it doesn’t, the white will just fall flat. If you do have a great amount of light, I like how Swiss Coffee pairs with AB. You may also want to check out SW Shoji White which is closer to a greige, but may give you the lightness you’re looking for as well as a bit of warmth and enough contrast to still let your trim stand out.

Hi Jennifer! Those cabinets above (actually two sets of them) came straight from the manufacturer, so I do not have an exact color. Regardless, SW Pure White is a beautiful off-white that’s very similar to my cabinets (that are next to AB). In my opinion, AB works well with both True Whites and Off-Whites. What I’d pay attention to however, is the color of your trim and interior doors etc. I’d try to coordinate the white to work with other existing finishes in your home. The counter is something to keep in mind too!
My husband brought the painters in 6-8 weeks to early. Now 10 guys are set up all over a 7500 sq fr home getting ready to be sold. We inherited it. A designer wants to do Agreeable Gray all over the home, the foyer, living room and family room are two story. He wants to do Gauntlet Gray cabinets in the office with Accessible beige walls. He wants to do all window and baseboard trim in the Gauntlet Gray as well. That room is to the left of the foyer which will be Agreeable Gray. It does not get much light because of trees. I’m worried that Guantlet Gray will be too dark also. I feel like other grays look better with Gauntlet Gray than accessible beige and I’m not sure about it in rooms next to it with Agreeable Gray. This office also has a knotty pine wood strip cathedral ceiling which comes down way too low on the sidewalk. I don’t know what to paint that. The decorator wants to do the Accessible beige at the far right of the house in the too small dining room too. For some reason I’m not a fan of the accessible beige and I don’t know why because I like warmer colors. This decorator, who I chose, my husband loves, but the guy doesn’t like you questioning or not doing exactly what he says. Thoughts? And thank you in advance.
Hi Lisa! I’m sorry you’re in such a tough position. Paint can be difficult because although there can be some ‘right and wrongs’ a lot of it comes down to personal taste. I’m sure your designer has a vision in mind and I don’t want to speak over that, but I will give you my opinions on your specific questions. Personally, I would not switch between Agreeable Gray and AB within the main body of the home, unless there were very specific reasons. AG has a violet undertone and AB has a green undertone, hence there are different reasons to use them in different spaces. And I would agree with you, I’m not sure I’d use AB and Gauntlet in the same area. They do both have a green undertone, but I’d be more likely to look into something like BM Revere Pewter. There’s a lot of unknowns on my end (other hard finishes, counters, tiles etc) that would also play a role. Hi Sarah, that’s hard to say without seeing the floors, but I’d also take into consideration any furniture you have in that space as the fabrics and their undertones would play a role in your selection as well.

Hi Dustin, depending on the rooms your considering painting, there are likely some other elements that could play a more important role than the floors alone. Furniture, counters, tiling etc are all things that should be paid attention to when selecting your paint color.
Hello Marisa, So happy I ran across your article on Accessible Beige! I was strongly considering using Tony Taupe (2 down from AB on swatch) as a trim on my house exterior which also has a red and black “antiqued” brick with a wee bit of pink showing upon close inspection. However, I saw a comment that said to avoid putting anything with a pink undertone with AB. Now, I’m thinking I should reconsider…I don’t want to see pink!
Hi Debbie, yes, it’s true. Chances are the green undertone in AB could end up enhancing the pink in your brick. And if that’s not what you’re looking for, I’d recommend staying away from those green undertones ;)
My entire home is painted accessible beige! It’s a terrific color. I’m preparing to replace the carpet in the bedrooms. Do you think this would go well with the DreamWeaver carpet in Iron Frost (has gray in it). Or perhaps their Linen color carpet would work better (no gray)? I would appreciate any advice you have!
I think this carpet may actually be too dark. Is there a carpet you could recommend to go with accessible beige?
Hi Lindsay! When you’re looking for carpet it’s not necessarily that one or another would be too dark (that’s simply more of a preference), but you do want to look for something that has a green undertone. Both beige and gray could have green undertones, you’ll just have to compare and compare to see the difference. I recommend painting a large swatch of AB if you’re heading into the store to look which will help you see more clearly.
I have SW Nacre trim. I’m looking to update my wall color and looking at Accessible Beige. Would this work with Nacre trim or is there a different color similar to Accessible Beige you would recommend?
Hi there! Although I haven’t personally worked with Nacre, it does appear to have a green undertone which would work well with AB (which also has a green undertone). The only issue is that you won’t have as much of a contrast as you would with a true white or even off-white. I’d paint a large sample and take it around your space, holding it up to the trim in various areas to get a better feel for it!

We are repainting our interior Accessible Beige. Do you have any suggestion on a complimentary “whiter” trim color than Aesthetic White (the suggested pairing per the SW sample card)? I’ve tried the Aesthetic White in several locations, and it’s not giving me the pop/contrast I’d like to see from the trim. However, Extra White looks too stark against our cherry floors and warm-toned cabinets, etc. Many thanks!
Hi Cheryl! No, I wouldn’t use Aesthetic for trim with AB and you are correct, Extra White would be pretty harsh. I’d look into something slightly off-white like SW Pure White.

Hi Jenn! I would focus a little less on what works best with AB (although that certainly plays a role) and more on what undertones you’re working with in your bedrooms (carpets, rugs, bedding etc). Those play a more important role in the outcome!

Hi Limmy, this is a tough one to answer without diving into a consultation and getting my eyes on everything. However, in general I’d say AB would give you the flexibility to go with either a brown or slate colored roof. I’d take into consideration other things such as exterior light fixture finishes and the amount of warm or cool tones in the stone and let those things help to guide you.

I recently painted my mediterranean style home (red/orange tile roof and walkway has red/orange brick). The color we went with was revere pewter and while the front(north facing) looks okay, the west side looks really purple and very cold in the afternoon. I knew about the green undertone but was unprepared for the purple! I pulled the painter off the job and said I needed to start over. So now I have a half painted house and am more confused than ever. I had a paint consultant come out and mentioned AB as a house color. I only worry something strange will happen with the undertones like it did with RP. The last thing I wanted was stucco that turned purple or pink! I wasn’t sure if the green plants made the RP look more purple. Do you think AB would be a nice alternative to the current transition color of RP? I’m so confused and not sure which direction to go because none of the colors I choose look the same on the stucco!! I wondered if something like canvas tan or natural tan is a better choice? I’d just like a nice soft color against my roof. Thanks

Hi there. We are moving into our home at the end of the month. My mother in law passed away on Christmas. We inherited her house. We renegotiated the lease we were in and that puts us moving the Ned of April. With the shelter in place going on in these crazy times everything we do is basically online. The home we are currently in has gray on the walls but it reads such a cool grey it reminds us of a very sterile office. Our painter had suggested a Greige tone. I need something a bit warmer than agreeable grey. Husband wants entire home painted all the same just to make it easier. He doesn’t like the different rooms different colors most times. The front room and kitchen will be one open room. The sofa is an ikea sofa with a sea mineral blue green fabric. Cabinets will be white. We still have to pick out appliances. Think husband likes stainless steel. Have not picked out counter tops just yet because need to see my paint. Would accessible beige be better choice than AB, or is there another tone that is more neutral not a green or violet undertone? Thanks so much
Hi Dana, I’m sorry that you have all this going on amidst this pandemic. I’m hoping it’s helping to at least add some helpful distractions. As a starting point, I typically always work with my clients to select counters prior to paint. It can be much more trying to find a counter you love when you’re forced to work off of a paint color. When it comes to working with your sofa, I could see Agreeable Grey working well with the blue/greens much better than AB would. AG has a warm violet undertone which is very soft and pretty. You could also check out Egret White which is lighter but still has a violet undertone or Shoji White which is more of a greige (but I most certainly recommend testing them in your space before deciding.) Hi Maria, Shoji could work well with AB, it’ll depend how it reads in your home. I’ve seen it go very greige to very yellow, so definitely try it out. Two other colors you could check out that also have slight green undertones are BM Ballet White and BM Soft Chamois. Both would work well with AB.
Hello, I painted my entire upstairs AB and love it. I decided to use AB downstairs and it goes blue gray with the afternoon light with my beige and ivory marble tile and granite. What wall color should I use downstairs to stay on the Beige side and compliment the AB upstairs? I want to stay away from grey walls while using Alabaster on the cabinets and trim.
Hi Kim, that’s a very tricky question to answer without diving into a consultation and seeing what may be going on. Light can certainly play games, but there may be other outside influences affecting the color as well.

We have a large, open concept, ranch home. Currently all of our foyers and hallways are Accessible Beige. Our great room and kitchen are Balanced Beige. I do not love Balanced Beige. I feel like it sometimes shows too much of a red/orange undertone.
I want to repaint the great room and kitchen so all there rooms are the same AB. I love the color and feel like it would have a better flow. We are also getting ready to have our cabinets repainted. Because of our dark counters, and light floors I do not think bright white cabinets will looks good. Do you think Aesthetic White would be a good cabinet color with Accessible Beige Walls? Would there be enough of a contrast?
Hi Amy, I haven’t worked much with Aesthetic White, but to me it reads a touch gray. Before worrying about whether or not the cabinetry will work with your AB walls, I’d first let your counter guide you as that’s going to be ‘bossier’ in terms of what you should use. In general, I’d say that most off-whites work well with AB.
Hi…love your blog… I dont feel alone anymore. I am currently using AB with alabaster trimming. I used it in two rooms with different flooring. The one with light floor seems to get a really nice cream tone to it, but the one with medium brown wood floors gave me more of a light yellow effect. I have one more bedroom to go (baby girl/medium brown wood floor) and would like to stay on the cream side of tone since it will be matched with white furniture and rose pink bedding. I also purchased a sample of natural choice and is too light and accessible beige is kind of dark. If i cut AB 25%, would it give me a cream effect? Could it be the lighting? choose Another color? desperate for suggestions.. plz!!!
Hi Mariela, this one is tough to answer without diving into a consultation and seeing images, but I would not say that cutting AB will make it creamier. Light could play a factor and if you have the time to sample, you certainly could. Maybe try looking at BM Natural Cream and see what you think of that.

Hi Felicia, I’m unaware of ways to darken a color, but you could look at SW Balanced Beige which is one down on the color chart, or check out BM Pashmina which is another pretty green gray.

Hi Ann, there’s a lot more you should take into consideration when selecting a wall color (such as your counter tops and furnishings in the space), but not knowing any of that, I’d look to an off-white such as BM White Dove or similar.
Hi. We will be painting our whole house very soon, within 10 days and are trying to make a final decision about a paint color. We like the warmth of Accessible Beige compared to greiges that are more gray. Also half of our house has beige carpet and and I’m not a fan of gray walls and beige carpet. So Accessible Beige seems like a better choice in that regard as well. We have concerns about our wooden floors and cabinets however. We have natural maple cabinets and our wood floor has also yellowed some, making it look sort of maple. Will AB go OK with these more yellowed woods? Also, we are thinking of cutting the AB by 25% in our dark upstairs hallway but keeping it at full strength in the upstairs bedrooms. Will that look OK? Thanks for your help!
Hi Karen, as all cabinetry varies, that’s more of a question I’d have to dive into a consultation with in order to see everything (counter tops included) to be able to give you a definitive answer. But as a more vague answer, AB could potentially work well. There’s no problem cutting the color for some rooms. It will still flow well and chances are you may not even notice the subtle difference. You’ll want to sample it prior, either way. And may even end up cutting it by 50% in order to achieve the lightness that you’re looking for.

Hi Patti, I don’t. It’s a pretty straight green undertone to me. It could be something in your surroundings (carpet, furniture etc) influencing the color in that way.

Hi Kathleen, I’m not as familiar with Baby Fawn, but I believe it’s rather similar to BM Edgecomb Grey. If that’s the case, they both have a green undertone, but Edgecomb comes off reading a little more grey to me than AB does.
I was told Baby Fawn is another name for Edgecomb Grey.

Not much light comes through my living room/kitchen and I am looking to brighten the area. I currently have Wheeling Neutral throughout my house by BM and its very dark with Dover white trim. What color would be best to brighten the area? However a lot of light comes through the foyer and dining room. Would accessible beige work best for foyer and dining room? If I go too light in dining room with all the lighting i think it would not pop.

I desperately need help with paint color! My living room and dining room are west facing and does not get a lot of light during the day; only late afternoon. I currently have Benjamin Moore Bleeker Beige on the walls with SW Pure White trim. I want to lighten the walls and have been looking at SW Accessible Beige at 50% and Canvas Tan. Wood floors have a golden undertone. I have a large wall unit painted in SW Alabaster. Tables are dark wood; sofas are covered in a light linen; two chairs are in a brownish gray and cream fabric and one acent chair in an aqua and cream fabric. rugs are a wool beige with a bit of gray. Is there another light beige or gray you would recommend? Agreeable Gray? Thank you!

I have a Safevieh Antiquity blue/grey area rug with greens, reds, ivory and reds mixed in. My floors are medium brown LVP. Love your blog! I am looking for a fresh, light, yet warm color to paint our front hallway which leads from the front door into our kitchen. You can also see the living room when you first enter the front door but it is separated by an opening with trim. The living room is painted a sage green (don’t recall paint color name). We have white oak floors with white dove trim and kitchen cabinets. Kitchen counters are white granite. Our homes interior style is country cottage. I want to lighten up our hallway as it doesn’t receive much light, yet keep it warm. Do you think AB at 25% will work well with the floors, trim color and compliment sage green paint in living room? Hi Sue! I’d have to dive into a consultation to see the current green and other accents you have going on to best make a specification here, but in general with all other things pending, AB should work well. White Dove is a great color to work around, so soft and beautiful!
I forgot to mention the walls in our kitchen are white dove.
Also, I always recommend painting a sample on a large board to look at around your space prior to making a final decision.
I just picked AB at 80% to paint the whole house . The living room which is open to the breakfast area doesn’t get a lot of natural light so the color looks dark even at daytime. Will it be ok if I use AB at 50% or 25% in the living room area ? Thank you.
Hi Sonia, I’ve used AB at 50% before in a space that’s not well lit. It’s in the third image above, although I realize it doesn’t show very well, but in person it worked perfectly.
We have selected Accessible Beige for our first floor (living room, family room and stairwell walls) but the painter is asking if we want flat or satin. I hadn’t even thought about it and now I’m stuck. Which would you recommend? Thanks.
For high traffic areas satin makes more sense as flat will show every imperfection!

Stumbled across your article while searching accessible beige vs agreeable gray. 4 years ago we bought a fixer upper (built 1925) and we painted almost all of the interior accessible beige, with pure white trim and I painted all the doors urban bronze. All of the rooms have pops of turquoise, like a painting here, a throw pillow there, maybe a lamp or rug in another room. Nothing over powering. I actually love love love the combo but after 4 years have kinda grown tired of all the same colors. We’re updating in preparation to sell the house and a couple rooms I’m painting agreeable gray so combat my AB fatigue. After that long drawn out speel, I’ll get to my actual question. I picked and then painted my kitchen a horrible yellow. I wish I could remember the exact color but it just doesn’t seem to ebb and flow with the rest of the house. I’m thinking it’s way too cool toned. I still know I want a yellow, and also still want pops of turquoise in my accent pieces but can’t seem to come up with the perfect warmer yellow (if such a think exists lol) Do you have any suggestions?
Hi Gabby, yellow is a tricky color for sure. But especially in a kitchen, you need to keeping your hard finishes (counters and tiles especially) in mind when selecting a color. Hi Navtika, being that AB has a green undertone, you want to keep that in mind with your neutral pieces….furniture and rugs especially. As long as those align, you’ll have a wide array of colors you’ll be able to accent and decorate with.
What are your thoughts on ab cut 50% and then the trim AB not cut
To be honest, I don’t think you’ll see that much of a difference in color if that’s what you’re after. Especially being that walls and trim are typically done in different paint finishes.
Wow I love reading all the comments about paint. I have grown to love painting my walls but I struggle with putting up a sample on the existing color. It always looks wrong but then ends up being ok. So, with that being said, I have a yellow living, dining room from 10 years ago. I’m looking to paint it SW AB. It’s off of of my foyer and other living room which is sort of open and you can see it from the area I am speaking of and it’s painted SW Muslin. My floors are a light wood looking tile with tan, grey and neutrals and I think it matches well with the AB. My furniture is wood and I do have some red couches. More of Cajun red color. So, would the SW AB look good next to my foyer and other living room painted Muslin? Also I have SW Shiitake in a bonus room off of the other side of this yellow area. I have lots of natural light in my home with vaulted ceilings and trim painted pure white. Hope this info helps with your answer. Thank you!
Hi Carrie, this is my personal opinion, but I do not typically choose to move from one neutral to another with varying undertones with similar color saturations. I’d rather stick to the same color or move to another color that is noticeably lighter or darker in saturation.
Hello again! I just got this message and already painted! The problem with my room is I have red couches that I love and was coming from yellow walls. I couldn’t figure out what color on my walls with these red couches. Floors are a beige, brown and grey wood looking wide plank tiles and med and dark wood furniture and tons of natural light. We’re planning AB throughout with SW Alabaster or SW Pure White for trim and ceiling. What other color would work for dining room and small den (both near front foyer)? Hi Norma, a lot depends on your decor and any hard finishes in bathrooms. But with those things aside, you could look at SW Fawn Brindle, it’s a beautiful, richer green gray.

Thought for sure it would go great with everything. We got the main parts of our home painted yesterday and I guess with our lighting the gray really comes out more than the beige, especially in the kitchen, and I’m pretty disappointed. It also clashes with our kitchen cabinets that are cream colored and now look yellow-y. Is there a white cabinet color that would complement the AB and bring out the beige more? We also have dark wooden floors and light brown/beige/gray undertones in backslash and granite. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Hi, I am thinking about painting my South facing LR accessible beige. You can see my kitchen from the LR which is painted canvas tan. Do you think those two colors flow ok?
My personal preference would be to use a color that complimented your current Canvas Tan. AB is a very similar color and although I don’t see any issue with it as they have similar undertones, I’d first attempt to see if Canvas Tan could run throughout or take a totally different direction and find something complimentary.
Hi Marisa, I am updating a small mountain home. The great room has south facing windows so gets massive natural light. I am thinking AB for open living room, dining, kitchen and hallway. Adjacent bedroom, office and bath will be SW sea salt. What would be best white trim color -BM dove white, cloud white or simply white? Am thinking pine floors with tung oil so have yellow tones (but haven’t committed yet), dining table white oak natural and chairs black. Would green kitchen cabinets in BM 2145-30 brookside moss work with AB? Countertops will be virginia mist which is charcoal with white veins (similar to soapstone but more durable). Most great room furnishings are being replaced.
Hi Kathy, it all sounds beautiful! All three of those whites are off-whites that would work well, Simply White being the least ‘off-white’ of them all. As for the Brookside Moss, I have not worked with that color in person, so I’d sample that on a large scale to see first hand before making a decision, but you’re definitely thinking along the right line!
I now understand that AG has green undertones. If I were buying all new upholstered furniture for an empty room in an off white or beige color, should I buy that fabric also has green undertones? I don’t necessarily want to accentuate the green beige.
Hi Lisa, yes, I’d focus on making sure you look at beige fabrics with a green undertone or off-white (which wouldn’t have green undertones, but yellow which would be just fine). The reason undertones stand out is due to conflicting undertones in a room.
Greetings! Sure appreciate all of your insight into Accessible Beige. We are painting our cabinets AB and are trying to decide between BM White Dove or SW Alabaster or SW Snowbound for the walls. Looking for a warm off white. Curious what you would suggest? And then we are also considering painting the trim and doors AB at 50-75%. But that seems out of the box and I’m not sure I want beige around our big windows. I have seen AB trim on the floor and doors and then white on windows but not sure if that would be too inconsistent. I’d love your thoughts! Thank you so much!

Hi David. I’d sample that one for sure. Dover has a decent amount of yellow to it and at 50% AB I’d want to see that in person before commiting.
I just recently painted my hallway and entryway in Assessable Beige. However, I am needing recommendations for the ceiling. Thoughts?
Hi Mary! If you are looking for a statement color, I’d work off of your decor. If you are looking for a white my first recommendation would be to use the ceiling white that have running throughout the rest of your home.
Hello, I am in a remodel of my kitchen and was hoping to paint my cabinets more of a beige then white. I have not chosen countertops yet but was hoping to stick to something that was a white backdrop with specs of white, tan, beige, and grey. Would you suggest a grey color that I could paint my walls? There is not much light until the sun begins to go down.

I am sure this is a personal preference but I would like someone else’s opinion and my husbands doesn’t count. Which would you choose based on your experience and expertise? I only have one window in my kitchen but it is a larger eat in kitchen. Our floors are barn wood from Sam’s and we have not purchased countertops yet but am going to purchase laminate with both grey and beige in it. So…. accessible beige cabinets with a grey wall with green undertone (have any favorites) or accessible beige walls with Snowbound cabinets?

That’s going to depend on the undertone of the grey in your carpet. Accessible Beige has a green undertone, so as long as your grey doesn’t have a blue or violet undertone, then there’s a good chance it would work. I’d always recommend sampling first though!

My backsplash is marble with light tones of grey and brown my countertops are colonial white with deep brown specks. Would love to use AB. And figure out wall color after. I can send pictures!

Hello, My kitchen is painted SW AB, as well throughout the house. My trim and doors are painted SW Alabaster. I want to have the kitchen cabinets painted. My countertops w/ 4″ backsplash are Giallo Ornamental, not as gold, more creamy. The granite looks good up againist SW AB.
Question: Should I paint cabinets SW Alabaster because trim work is SW Alabaster? I’m open to a contrasting color , too.
Hi Cindy! I can’t say for certain without a consultation and getting to see everything, but if your Alabaster trim works well with your counters, then you are probably safe to use that on your cabinets as well.
Our remodel of our great room/kitchen is nearly done. The new kitchen cabinets are Accessible Beige. I’m struggling to pick a light wall color that does look gray or make the AB lean gray. The island we’ll paint a contrasting color like SW Retreat or SW Dried Thyme. Any suggestion for the walls? Thoughts overall?

Hi Carrie! I’d be more than happy to book a consultation with you to best be able to see everything and give you more than a guess….but in general I’d lean more towards a warm complex cream or a shade with a subtle green undertone in order to compliment the AB.
Hi! I’m remodeling my kitchen with white shaker cabinets, and am thinking of painting the outside of my peninsula a soft greyish color. My walls are accessible beige, pure white trim throughout, and all my furniture is dark wood and light fabric. I will have a custom-built white china cabinet/sideboard across from the peninsula, which my contractor thinks I should paint in the same color as the front of the peninsula. What would be a good neutral color in the grayish family, to complement accessible beige? (Both the cabinet and peninsula will be set off against the AB colored wall). I need something that will make the dark wood standout. I also have wrought iron and brass lighting. I’ve read that warm or cool grays darker than AB would work, but I’m not sure what LRV I should be looking at as a guide. I appreciate any help you could provide! :)
Hi Monica! I’d have to schedule a consultation with you for this one in order to see everything and be able to accurately specify the right color for you. Pairing AB with another grey could be quite tricky, I’d certainly stay away from blue and violet grays and I’d make sure you find something with enough of a contrast or it could be a case of colors going very wrong here.
Hello, we are building a new home and I have changed my mind several times regarding paint colors. Current plan is to use SW Snowbound for cabinets and trim color with white countertops. 4×6 kitchen Island in SW Rosemary with reclaimed oak top. The kitchen adjoins a hearth room with antique oak mantel and both rooms are open to living and dining room. From front door, you can see from front to back of house and this entire area. Floors throughout will be med oak laminate. I was thinking of using a lighter shade of green in this area to compliment SW Rosemary island but after reading your blog, AB with green undertones may be the best neutral for the entire space. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Hi Kathy! This sounds lovely. I could see AB potentially being a good option here. I’d definitely recommend painting a large sample on poster board to move around your room before committing so you can get a good visual for how it will look in your space.
I love this color- so classy and cozy! I got my kitchen cabinets redone by a local cabinet refinisher just a few weeks ago in Sherwin William’s Pearl Gray and I love how perfect the color looks! Now I’m just debating what color to choose when I repaint my walls, and now I’m leaning towards accessible beige…
That could certainly be one to sample. I’d also pay attention to the colors/undertones in your counter tops and tile. Hi. I am in the process of remodeling my kitchen. The walls are AB, the trim and wainscoting are SW pure white and the counters are Gallo ornamental. What color should I stain the cabinets? I’m thinking maybe minwax espresso, which has a red undertone, or ebony or dark walnut. The floors are whitewashed oak.

Hi. We are in the middle of a mini small remodel in our kitchen. We have Hickory cabinets that I have been dreaming of painting AB for a few years now. We have purchased new black slate appliances and ordered a kitchen island in a deep cranberry with a distressed cherry top. We thought the AB and a white for molding. We have picked out backsplash tile and flooring (purchased already). What would you suggest for the molding color and wall color. Do you think the deep cranberry island will be ok with AB? I panicked when you said in a previous reply that AB doesn’t go well with pink undertones. Won’t that be the kitchen island?
Hi Tina, I’d have to take a look at all that you have going on in order to make an accurate assessment here. AB could be a possibility, but chances are it would enhance the ‘green’ and ‘pink’ undertones. Sometimes this is a negative, but it could also be a situation where the combo compliments each other. I’d recommend sampling the color before making any decisions!
I recently updated our countertops in Dallas white Granite with Cherry Cabinets. Our kitchen flooring is very light beige and white with some light brown. With Open living concept, living room is dark hardwood floors. Would Agreeable gray be a contrast or a coordinating color on the wall? I want warm coordinating colors. I have to decide very soon. What would be a warm coordinating color for the walls that is not dark but not white either.
Hi Uzma, this is a situation where I’d need to see images of your counters, tile, backsplash etc to make an accurate recommendation. Accessible Beige could be a possibility assuming it works well with the undertones in these other hard finishes. Redoing our kitchen. Walls are AB and I’ve read here that SW pure white is a good white with that color, so I was wondering if that white would work on the cupboards? backsplash is white and countertops are a little off white quartz with grey marbling.
Hi Connie, the best white for your cabinets is going to be one that relates well to your tile and counter. And I’d recommend sampling on a large poster board before committing!
Hi, we are getting a very mildly whitewashed European Oak floor put in, and I’m really wanting to paint Accessible Beige on the walls with Pure White trim. I’m just trying to determine if Accessible Beige and our floor shade would look too similar. I have a sample of the floor I’m looking at with a big paint sample. Accessible Beige is warm with gray undertones. Our light floor is softly golden with gray undertones. I can’t determine if they’re too close. What’s your opinion on this?

Do you think accessible beige would work with SW Manitou blue as an accent wall with SW Pure white trim and kitchen cabinets? Also, thoughts on doing cabinets a different color from the trim with the previously mentioned wall choices? I love that blue but want a warm neutral to keep it feeling warm in a home with little natural light.
Hi Sarah, this is a very tough call to make without being able to see anything. A lot would depend on your decorating that would revolve around these spaces. AB is a great neutral, but as mentioned, it does have a green undertone to it. Just looking at the colors alone, I’m not sure I’d love that crisp/clean of a blue paired with AB, but again, if the decorating is done right, there’s a possibility.
Hi Marisa! I’m so glad to have come across your post. I have been pulling my hair out with all of these undertones! I am in the process of repainting my main living areas. We don’t have open concept – but the foyer does open onto the dining room which is open to the kitchen. The ceilings are 8 ft but we get a lot of East/West natural light. Currently the rooms are painted BM Bleeker Beige (foyer), BM Chelsea Grey (dining) and BM Bennington Grey (kitchen). It’s looks great but I wanted to lighten and unify the space by painting everything one colour. I have been toggling between both Revere Pewter and Accessible Beige. I am leaning towards Accessible Beige. What’s throwing me off are the kitchen cupboards which are BM White Down. My floors are Cinnamon Maple hardwood in the dining room and a light taupe in the foyer. I’m thinking Accessible Beige is the perfect balance. I realize it’s very hard without picture but would you choose Accesible Beige in this scenario?
Hi Carina! Yes, discussing paint colors without being able to see things can get very sticky. I don’t foresee any problems with the AB and creaminess of White Down, but I’d certainly sample on a large scale the AB around the taupe floor. Taupe tends to have a strong violet/pink undertone as AB carries a green undertone. Also keep in mind your rugs, furnishings, countertops etc as they play a strong part in your wall color selection as well!
Hello, we are having about half our interior done soon. Currently, I believe it is Swiss Coffee which is way too light for me. We have very high ceilings and beautiful thick crown moldings which will be white. I want to use SW Accessible Beige in most of the areas but want to add a couple of other colors- in maybe the main bedroom or bathroom. Would you recommend Sackcloth or Loggia? Also want to use a bluey color for an accent wall in the kitchen. Thinking about Sea Salt. I’d love some comments. This is a bug undertaking and I want to make sure I’m making the right decisions! Hi! I have 90s orange oak flooring throughout and a two story foyer with agreeable grey . Looks great. The foyer leads via small hall to the kitchen/fam room running the back of the house. Cabinets are simply white , trim board and batten and bookcases all simply white. Counters are Silestone eternal gold (white with pale strations) the backspace is a neutral natural taupe grey white matte marble herringbone. Island is Knoxville grey.
I could take the AG throughout – I know it would look nice however I was trying to warm the kitchen up a tad – I feel the AG is a bit cool. No furniture yet but looking navy’s and stone modern cottage . Don’t want cold modern look though.
Problem is the hall from foyer to kitchen butting the AG.
Stick with AG all over and just try to warm with textures? Or go with AB or Natural Linen or Cream and sugar. Very little wall to paint in kitchen -larger wall in family room.

I’m getting ready to repaint my basement family room – it has oak wood trim and oak flooring, but it is not “orangy” oak. My furniture is taupe leather. I have balanced beige in my upstairs living room and really like it, but am considering accessible beige or agreeable grey as a lighter alternative for the basement. It’s a view out so there’s quite a bit of natural light. Thoughts on either of those or something else?
Hi Deb! If your sofa is a true taupe (meaning it has pink/violet undertones) then I would recommend sampling Agreeable grey which also had a violet undertone. Accessible beige as I mentioned above, has a green undertone and wouldn’t work as well for that reason. BM Pale Oak and SW Egret White may be two others to look into.
My living room is City Loft with Pure White trim. Looking for a deeper color for my dining room which has a continuous wall into the kitchen. Kitchen has black/gray marble countertops. Wondering if Agreeable Gray will be enough contrast from City Loft, but also not sure if Accessible Beige will work with the countertops. Dining room table is reddish cherry. Thoughts on which might work best, agreeable gray or accessible beige? Or additional colors to try? Thank you!

Hi Carla! I have used this color a lot in my own home as well as in clients homes and I have only cut it one time. In my opinion, it’s the most beautiful at full strength. I have it in our bedroom where we do have decent light during the day however it’s equally as pretty at night….it’s like it wraps you in a hug :) I have a feeling it wouldn’t be quite as dark as you are expecting either. If you don’t feel comfortable with that, you may just want to seek out another, lighter color altogether. I hope you love whatever you go with!
I just painted most of my house Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige. The painters finished yesterday and the walls seem dark to me. They used to be Benjamin Moore Muslin. My question is will the new paint dry lighter? I would hate to repaint. Thanks
I would like to replace my Believable Buff with Accessible beige. Will it go well with my travertine floors and darker wood floors. I am trying to lighten up the rooms and get a more updated color on the walls.
