I hope you all had a great weekend and a very sweet Valentine’s Day! Jack and I managed to get out for a lunch date and an afternoon of running around town. It’s always a treat to spend one on one time with him without being interrupted mid- sentence…every sentence, ha! It was a beautiful weekend, but boy was it cold! As in way below freezing bundled in down and every cold weather accessory I own kind of cold. Needless to say we didn’t have a chance to do any shoots outdoors, but I’ve been taking note of all the beautiful dresses and jumpsuits that have been rolling out lately. I’m currently helping to style someone for an upcoming wedding but the problem is that new options keep coming out daily making it extremely difficult to narrow things down! With Easter and wedding/shower season on the horizon I figured I’d share some of the many options that have crossed my mind. After all the groundhog did say we’d have an early spring, right?!

Under Your Feet

Since moving last year, home decor has been on my mind non-stop. We’re tackling it all little by little which is good because I’m kind of known for changing my mind about things. My husband just loves that (read sarcasm). Oh and I’m eagerly awaiting the release of Joanna Gaines’ (of HGTV’s Fixer Upper) new furniture line which is to be out in the next month or so. I’m slightly obsessed and dying to see what she’s created!

I have a few girlfriends that are always decorating and re-decorating along with me so it seems we’re always passing ideas back and forth. From paint to wallpaper and renovating kitchen’s (I’m in the middle of designing one with a friend at the moment and hoping she’ll let me share details once it’s complete!) and everything in between. I love playing around with every last detail. That leads me to today’s topic of rugs. I’ve already tackled 3 rugs for our home and I still need 2 more that I haven’t figured out just yet. I always go back and forth on whether I want a beautiful rug that makes a statement or a soft neutral that will blend in subtly with the space. I’ve done some of both so far (neutral for the family room and bold in the dining room and my husband’s office). Needless to say, I’ve spent my time scouring the internet. So today I’m sharing a dozen of my favorite neutral and statement rugs. For me personally, I love neutrals for living rooms and bedrooms. And it can be fun to play with statement rugs for playrooms (see #3 and #5), offices (we used #3 in my husband’s and it’s perfect), nurseries (see #1 and #6) etc. The fun part is that there are no rules when it comes to rugs. You can do whatever suites you and your lifestyle.

Talking Basics: denim

Alright ladies, today is the second installment in our Talking Basics series (you can see the first featuring the basic white tee here) and we’ll be tackling denim. In some ways it can be a real love/hate relationship…do you feel that way? I love it because it’s a great neutral and a wardrobe staple. Kind of like hardwood floors in decorating. When you have a great base it’s much easier to put an outfit together (or decorate a room, see what I mean?). In another way, finding the right brand, fit, style, color that suits your shape and style can be a real time consumer. I’ve been there and continue to find myself there time and time again!

Let’s start by covering the basic styles of denim. You have skinny, straight, boyfriend and flare. You can also throw in the legging which is basically super skinny, and bootcut which falls between straight and flare. Those take me back to my high school days and I’m honestly not a huge fan of bootcut, so for now I’m just going to set them aside. Outside of the basic styles you’ll also have to decide what wash you are looking for (light to dark and everything in between), what rise (high, mid or low), and if you want any distress to them. All of these choices are very personal and come down to what you feel the most comfortable in and how you’re looking to wear them.

Over the years I’ve built a rather nice collection of jeans but there are many that have come and gone. I swear after each child my body has settled in differently. Not necessarily good or bad, but different. So I once again find myself sorting through those that no longer fit ‘right’ and searching for the ‘perfect’ pair. There are however certain brands that I’m always able to turn to for denim. I’m not one to go cheap on denim for the most part because I can certainly tell a difference in quality. Although I have to say that lately I’ve been having a lot of luck with LOFT’s denim and during some of their sales you can get quite the steal. Other than LOFT, here are some of my tried and true denim brands:

I know a lot of others have luck with Citizens of Humanity and 7 For All Mankind, it’ll just depend what fits your body the best. As I recommended with the basic white tee’s, if you don’t have certain retailers nearby, try ordering from Nordstrom or ShopBop or someone that offers free shipping and returns so that you can go to town ordering a number of different brands/styles/sizes etc.

I like to have at least one pair of the following styles and typically more because I find I lean towards light denim for a while and then switch over to dark. There’s not really a right or wrong there. The same goes for the rise. I have never been a fan of low rise because I always ended up having that dreaded gap above the behind! Thank goodness mid and high rise is the current trend. I finally feel comfortable and plan on keeping it that way even when low decides to make it’s comeback!

You’ll also find the ‘ankle’ option when looking at skinny jeans which is a nice option to have. It creates a slim line when you show your ankle (ie the skinniest part of your leg) and can look great with booties or heels. I actually had a woman comment on my ankle jeans as I was loading my daughter into the car at the supermarket a little while back. She said “I have the hardest time finding that length in jeans!” Ankle was what she was looking for I assured her ;)

Did you all enjoy the Super Bowl? Or maybe the commercials? :) We actually hosted for a handful of friends so I spent more time chatting than watching, but regardless, I had a good time. Hopefully I’ll catch some of the good commercials in the weeks to come! So, onto the outfit…talk about the perfect time to stock up on sweaters. `The prices keep dropping, as does the inventory, but this particular sweater is currently under $30 and still in stock! I love the jeweled detail on this one, and my 8 month old mistakes it as her teether. I’m hoping you won’t have that same problem ;)

Love for the Littles

With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching I’m guessing there are many of you that like to shower your children, nieces/nephews or grandchildren with as much love as your significant other. There are so many sweet options out there when it comes to apparel it was hard to narrow them down for you, but I did my best! Not that they aren’t cute enough on their own, but I’d argue that these would all take the cute factor up a notch or two ;)

This is a favorite recipe of mine that I had totally forgotten about until I spent some time scrolling (and scrolling and scrolling) through my Pinterest boards the other day. Sometimes I find that I have recipes too widely spread between Pinterest, AllRecipes, my recipe books etc. That’s why I love documenting things here so I can keep my favorites gathered together and hopefully not forget about them! My husband was so excited when he saw I was making it again recently and by the end of the meal there wasn’t a left-over bite to be seen. It’s a tasty dish with a ton of flavor and slightly out of the ordinary for us. So glad it’s back in our regular rotation!

Chicken Lettuce Wraps & Peanut Sesame Noodles via The Every Girl

Chicken Ingredients:
1 head iceberg or bib lettuce
1 boneless skinless chicken breast cut into small pieces
1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1/2 red pepper, chopped (I use a whole one)
1 large carrot, peeled and shredded
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
½ tablespoon vegetable oil

Directions:

Carefully break off 8 lettuce leaves, leaving them whole. Set aside.
Season chicken pieces with salt and pepper.
Heat vegetable oil in saucepan over medium high heat and add in chicken pieces.
After about 5 minutes, add in chopped red pepper and carrot and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until chicken is cooked through.
Reduce heat to low and add in soy sauce, sesame oil, and rice wine vinegar. Stir to coat chicken and vegetables.
Pile chicken mixture into lettuce cups (about ¼ cup in each lettuce cup) and serve.

Noodle Ingredients:
½ lb. Spaghetti
2 tablespoons smooth peanut butter
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons sesame oil
2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
Scallions and/or sesame seeds for garnish

Directions:
Cook spaghetti according to directions on box.
While spaghetti cooks, add peanut butter, soy sauce, sesame oil, rice wine vinegar, garlic, sugar, and pepper flakes to a saucepan over medium heat.
Whisk until everything is combined and peanut sauce begins to simmer.
Remove from heat.
Drain pasta and return to pot.
Pour peanut sauce over noodles and use tongs to coat spaghetti.
Serve in a large bowl with chopped green onions or sesame seeds as a garnish.

It’s that perfect time of winter where it’s likely we have a lot more cold to endure, but the prices on the cold weather pieces that we need start dropping! You may know that I’m a fan of statement coats, so today I have gathered 9 beauties that may make it a little easier, or at least a little more fun, to brave the weather in the upcoming months.

I have always been a fan of the basics. By basics, I am referring to those articles of clothing that you reach for as a starting point and good foundation to your outfits. This includes, but isn’t limited to, your denim, t-shirts, basic sweaters, bras, underwear, everyday shoes etc. The majority of my outfits revolve around these pieces and if I don’t have ‘the right jeans’ or ‘the right layering shirt’ to work into an outfit I’m envisioning, we have a problem. We laugh about it, but when I was visiting an Anthro with some girlfriends a while back (visiting that store is a major treat now that I don’t have one anywhere near me!), they walked out with a few beautiful pieces and I ended up purchasing…wait for it…a white cotton tank! I didn’t hear the end of that one for a while, haha, but I’m telling you, when you find the right basics, it’s a dream come true :)

To start out, today I am discussing the basic white t-shirt (tanks and long sleeves included). One thing important to note as I discuss basics in general is that I’m not pegging ‘basic’ as ‘classic’. If you’re personality is preppy or boho, then by all means, your basics should reflect that as well. When it comes to white t-shirts, I like to mix it up a little bit. I like to keep a range of shirts everywhere from fitted to swing top, long, high/low, v-neck, crew neck etc. because different styles work into different outfits.

My point is not to make this feel overwhelming to you. I’m guessing you may have an idea of what shapes/styles/brands work best on your body. And if you don’t, let me recommend ordering a bunch of shirts from Nordstrom or ShopBop or somewhere that offers free shipping/returns and have at it. See what works in what sizes and brands the best for you. I’ve had some practice with this over the years and if you scroll through many of my posts I guarantee you’ll start to see some of my basics pop out at you. To give you a starting point, here are my most favorite brands that I have come to trust when it comes to basic tee’s (no, this isn’t a sponsored post):

These brands don’t exactly fall on the cheap side, but for me, this isn’t an area that I want to cheat. I’m much more willing to splurge on my basics than I am on the ‘fluff’ pieces that I only wear once in a while…unless it’s a fancy Kate Spade gift…but gifts are meant to be special ;). The main reason being that the higher quality makes a huge difference to me. A great benefit to knowing the brands that work well for me is that when I am able to hunt them down in a sale or find them randomly at TJMaxx, I can grab them without hesitation whether that’s what I was shopping for or not. Basics are a very personal choice, however, and the brand, price point, fit, style will all need to fit into your lifestyle. But if you find your $10 perfect tee, I’ll be envious for life!

I’m likely going to be continuing this conversation in the weeks to come because all of a sudden I seem to be reading about ‘basics’ rather often and I’m realizing I’m not alone in my love for them! I think it was a quote by Michael Kors that I recently read stating that 70% of your wardrobe should be made up of basic pieces while the other 30% should be the ‘fluff’, or something to that extent. I agree with that ratio whole-heartedly. Trendy, fun, frilly pieces (ie this top) are great fun and can really let your personality show through, but without the basics, many of those looks can prove difficult to achieve.

My apologies on the novel today! Hopefully some of you found this helpful. Apparently I have quite the passion for basics, so be prepared!

Ok girls, this top is SO much fun! When it arrived I had a hard time narrowing down how I wanted to style it. With the storm passing through over the weekend, I decided to shoot a few looks indoors, just so you’d have options ;) Despite the various styles, I’d say pumps are a must with this one. The over-zealous peplum pairs perfectly with 3in+ heels! These outfits could be worn on date nights at any point, but with Valentine’s Day approaching, it seems all the more appropriate to go a little over the top. My regular readers may also take note of the fact that I am wearing black….and being that black is not on my color wheel, I tend to wear it very rarely. Well, this top made the rare appearance worth it!
