a lovely living

Monthly Archives for May 2013

I had a request from a close friend of mine to post about dressing post-baby during the summer. I’m not in this position this year, but I have been twice in the past. The summer months can be brutal, and on top of that you’re trying to lose baby weight, haul around a baby (and or toddlers etc), and deal with out of whack hormones. I realize this doesn’t apply to all of you out there, but you’ll be happy to know that the outfits I’m putting together are all non-maternity clothes that anyone can enjoy during the hot summer months. Plus, it can never hurt to have a forgiving wardrobe, right?

Here are a few ideas I put together. Hopefully you’ll find this helpful!

Post baby
Not only is this maxi a forgiving black, but its loose structure would also carry you through most baby bearing months. Fortunately you can always rely on cute shoes to fit once any swelling has gone down! A few accessories and you’re done. (more…)

JCrew Factory blazer, Gap shirt (similar), Lia Sophia necklace (old), LOFT denim (similar), Arturo Chiang shoes (old), vintage clutch (grandma has good taste!), Michelle watch

This was an outfit I wore this past weekend on another chilly, windy day. We weren’t even able to take any outdoor shots because my hair was whipping in my face. Perfect day to throw on a classic blazer though! These blush jeans have been getting their wear this year. I love that I was able to sport them before Memorial Day without breaking any rules. They’re a nice alternative to basic white. This necklace is one of my favorites, yet I often find it too dressy to wear with most outfits. Pairing it with a tailored shirt and blazer gave it a casual yet polished look. I received a lot of compliments on it, so it must have made a statement. (more…)

Wish-list Wednesday

1. Anthro skirt  2. JCrew espadrilles  3. S&L tote  4. Tory Burch iphone case  5. Madewell tank  6. JCrew capri

I loved receiving your feedback after last week’s wishlist post and I am happy to have inspired some of you. I even heard from my mom how much she liked the ruffled dress. Thanks mom! Since I have a never ending/constantly evolving list, I’ve decided to give you another glimpse of what I’m currently loving. Who knows, maybe I’ll turn this into a weekly post. We’ll see!

This skirt would be such a fun piece to add to any closet. It’s beautiful, fun and appears to be quite comfortable, not to mention breezy for hot summer days. I love the stripes on the espadrilles. They have such a nice, clean look to them. I’m obsessed with this tote.  I can see myself carrying this around town all summer long with all of the kids’ crap  stuff thrown in. It would also be an essential at the shore.  Another pretty iPhone case. This one is for the iphone5, so apparently I need an upgrade first. I love the neon lace on this tank. It’s such a fun detail to a basic tank. And lastly the capri’s. Aren’t they great? The fresh color and polka dot pattern jumped out at me when I saw them. I could have some fun with these!

Thanks to some Memorial Day sales, the espadrilles and tank will be finding their way to my door soon, yeah!

Did you hit up any sales this weekend?

Simple Studs

Target shirt, AG skinny jeans (similar), Circa by Joan and David shoes, LC Lauren Conrad jacket, Lia Sophia necklace, JCrew bracelet (old), Marc Jacobs watch

For whatever reason, I tend to pick out the most expensive items while shopping. Whether it’s for clothing, jewelry or home goods, my mother can attest that whatever I pick up, it’s most likely not the cheapest in the store.  So when I find something I love at Target or Kohl’s I can rest easy knowing that whatever the price, it can’t be all that much. Such was the case with this adorable Tee from Target. It’s a simple piece, but the studded shoulders add a little touch of spunk. The day I wore this turned out to be quite chilly and I had thankfully picked up this boyfriend blazer at Kohl’s not long ago. It’s a great transitional jacket and pulled the outfit together nicely, even though my spunky studs were hidden. (more…)

Strawberry Yogurt Cake

Yesterday was my daughter Madelyn’s first birthday (sigh). I wanted to make her a special birthday dessert, but the poor thing was in bed before it was finished. Lucky for her I didn’t polish it off in one sitting. Madelyn is a strawberry lover (aren’t we all?), so when I came across this recipe, I felt it would be perfect. Other than the strawberries and lemons, you probably have the other ingredients on hand.  This cake is light and dense at the same time due to the moistness of the cake. Oh, and incredibly delicious. It would make a perfect dessert for any Memorial Day plans you may have.

Kate Spade sunglasses – Anthropologie top (similar) – Talbots necklace – Michelle Watch – Kate Spade bag – LOFT skirt (similar) – Madewell sandals

Don’t you love it when the weather goes from a chilly 60 degrees to sweltering in the 90’s within a matter of days? I don’t, but I also don’t have much of a say when it comes to Mother Nature. So what do you wear when you’re running errands and/or running after your kids in the heat? Loose, breezy cotton. I found this skirt at LOFT and it’s a great addition to my summer wardrobe. Casual but cute. I also recently found this Kate Spade cross body at our TJMaxx, but I saw it on Gilt yesterday too! It holds my wallet, phone and keys perfectly for the times when I don’t have a diaper bag thrown over my shoulder. As soon as I saw the mint stripe on the sandals, I was sold. Those peeps at Madewell sure know what they’re doing.

A Porch is Born

porch2

My family and I recently made the move from Hoboken, NJ to State College, PA. City life never allowed for much  any outdoor space of our own. The condo we’re now renting has a small porch that we were more than thrilled to see. I could hardly wait for the weather to warm up so that I could get myself busy decorating. All in a weekend’s work I was able to put this little ensemble together.

I first found the rug mistakenly thrown over a chair at HomeGoods and quickly threw it in my cart. I loved the print and the steal grey was a great base. We knew we wanted white rockers (don’t they always call your name as you drive by a Cracker Barrel?), and when I spotted the orange tray at TJMaxx I knew it was the perfect accent. The garden stool was also found at HomeGoods. I’ve been loving cornflower blue lately and I thought it’d fit in quite well. Another pop of orange in the cushions and a white lantern for our citronella candle (more HomeGoods finds) and you have our very first porch.

1. Crochet TOMS  2. JCrew scarf 3. iphone case 4. Ruffle dress 5. Mint capri 6. Kate Spade watch

I love keeping an up to date wishlist. Before Pinterest came to be, a few of my friends and I were using wishlistr.com to keep track of items we were currently craving in hopes that a certain someone (honestly, anyone) may surprise us with a little somethin’ somethin’. Pinterest has taken this to a whole new level! At any given moment, my wishlist will include pastels, ruffles, bows and flowers. I tend to be quite girly.

I’ve been eyeing these Toms for months now and I just can’t decide on a color. #commitmentissues. My closet can never have too many scarves and the pastels in this one are calling my name. It’s almost time for a new iPhone case and this one caught my eye recently. The dress is so soft and feminine and the swiss dots add the perfect touch. I’ll be watching for this little lady to go on sale! I’m always drawn to mint and lately it’s everywhere, including these gorgeous pants. And finally, Kate. I’m a watch junkie and I need to be kept under control, but this watch makes its way back on to my screen time and time again. I love Kate Spade accessories and this watch is no exception.

What’s currently on your wishlist?

Biker Chic

I love running in to the Gap to exchange something for one of my children only to find myself trying on an adorable jacket that I didn’t even know I needed until I laid eyes upon it, don’t you? What a great twist to the classic jean jacket. I love the three quarter sleeves, the faded denim and the dots on the lining (not shown) that add a touch of femininity. This will surely be thrown over some maxi’s this summer and will look great paired with white denim as well. The shirt was a Gap clearance purchase that my 3yo son encouraged me to buy, so I caved.

How would you rock this jacket?

Magic Bars

Magic Bars

I am a dessert lover. In fact, I have a sign in my kitchen that reads, “you will have your cake and eat it too”. Enough said. This is a simple recipe that I have made time and time again and people always go crazy over them. You can find the recipe here. I omit the walnuts. Weird fact #1 about me: I do not enjoy nuts in soft foods (ie breads, baked goods, ice cream), however I love them plain or in a trail mix. But please, bake as you choose. Either way, you can’t go wrong with this delish treat! (more…)
